Charles Octavius Boothe (1845–1924) was a formerly enslaved Baptist pastor, educator, and theologian who helped establish the Colored Baptist Missionary Convention in Alabama. His work Plain Theology for Plain People is renowned for making Christian doctrine accessible to formerly enslaved African Americans.
J. Deotis Roberts (1927–2022) was a theologian, professor, and leading voice in the Black theology movement which emphasized reconciliation, liberation, and the intersection of faith and social justice.
